Baby’s Poop Is Telling You More Than You Think

How your baby’s diaper can reveal what’s going on inside their gut

ree

Let’s talk about 💩 — because your baby’s poop isn’t just waste. It’s information. It tells us what’s happening in the gut, how well food is being digested, and whether something might be irritating their system.

So if something feels “off,” trust your instinct. Don’t let anyone brush it off with “they’ll grow out of it.”

Things you can learn from poop:

  • Colour:

    • Yellow-brown = good

    • Green + mucousy = possible sensitivity

    • Pale/grey = check bile flow

  • Texture:

    • Peanut butter smooth is ideal

    • Foamy, stringy, or pasty can signal imbalance

  • Frequency:

    • A baby pooping once every 7 days is not always normal

    • Neither is going 6+ times a day with diarrhea

  • Smell:

    • Yes, it’ll smell — but sour, metallic, or fishy smells are worth noting

Top things that affect baby poop:

  1. Gut flora (microbiome)C-section birth, antibiotics, and formula can all shape baby’s gut health.

  2. Food sensitivitiesDairy and soy are major culprits, especially through breastmilk.

  3. Constipation or liver stagnationEspecially if they strain, go days between poops, or pass hard pellets.

  4. Environmental triggers (like mold)If your baby has unexplained rashes, spit-up, or colic — this may be worth exploring.

What can you do?

  • Track patterns (photos + poop log = helpful)

  • Consider a probiotic with your ND’s guidance

  • If breastfeeding, look at your own diet

  • If formula-feeding, explore cleaner options

  • Most importantly: don’t guess — get support

I work with families every week to decode diaper clues.

You are your baby’s best advocate — and if something doesn’t feel right, that’s worth listening to.
